What can I do with my new vehicle after I purchased it but the payments are too much for me to handle?
Q. My wife and I bought a new vehicle in March for 32,000. We had to put 4,000 down on our credit cards but now it seems our debt keeps getting larger and larger. Any ideas on what we can do with our new vehicle without too much penalty?

A. Auto finance is what I do for a living. At this point you only have a few options open to you without ruining your credit. You can sell the vehicle yourself and then pay any difference between what you owe verse what you sell it for. You can get a trusted friend or family member to take over the payments on the vehicle. If you go this route, have them pay you so you can make sure the payments are made on time. You can try and refinance the vehicle through your own bank or credit union at a lower rate. The one thing you do not want to do is let the vehicle go back. This will result in a repossession showing up on your credit and the lender will sell the vehicle at auction for less than it's worth and come after you for the balance plus… [cont.]

Buying a new vehicle: How low would you go on gas mileage?
Q. My wife and I are toying with the idea of buying a new car. Right now, she's favoring a small SUV over a car. I don't like this idea mainly because of the poor gas mileage most of them get -- anywhere from 16 to 22 mpg in the city. What is the absolute lowest fuel economy rating that you would settle for in a vehicle, keeping in mind that you're a pretty light driver. My wife would use her vehicle to get to work and a few places on the weekend only. We don't plan on any major trips that we'll be taking in our car, either. If you choose to answer, give me the reason why fuel economy is or isn't important to you.

A. The Toyota Rav4 is a mid size SUV and gets 34 MPG!!! I wouldn't go lower than 30. Anything below 30 is pretty low for a small SUV.

What are the advantages/disadvantages for leasing a new vehicle, rather than buying?
Q. I see on TV you get low payments when you lease a new vehicle. I don't mind getting a new car every 3 yrs, I just wonder if there are any hidden costs when returning it?
Asked by kbboul@sbcglobal.net - Fri May 19 00:30:52 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Pay cash for your cars. Payments are a good way to stay broke or get broke. NEVER lease a car, or borrow money to buy one. If you are only going to keep your cars for 3 years and you dont drive more than 15K/year just buy used cars for cash that somebody else was stupid enough to lease. You will pay about 60% of the cost of a new one and it will still be under warranty. After another 3 years it will only have about 70K on it and you will still get decent trade value to buy another nearly new car. By paying cash you can put your 'payment' money in a good growth and income Mutual fund and retire early. Crunch the numbers...see what that payment is REALLY costing you. A $325.00 car payment if invested instead at just 10% return for 30 years… [cont.]

How is the stimulus package work when buying a new vehicle?Do you get the money off the price or on 2010 tax?
Q. Would I get the sales tax off the price of the new vehicle or do I have to wait until I file my taxes next year?I went to car dealers and nobody seemed to know.

A. The sales tax won't be deducted from the selling price of the car. Instead, you'll get a tax credit on the state tax you paid. But you will have to wait until you file your '09 taxes to take advantage of it.

How do I go about getting the best price with the most accessories on a new vehicle?
Q. I currently have an 05 Dodge Quadcab 5.7 L Hemi with 34,000 miles on it and things are starting to go wrong with it so I am going to trade it off for a new one. I am young and this is my first time going about things like this. What I need to know is how am I going to get the most for my vehicle and the best price on a new one. I also want aftermarket accessories thrown in without to much or no cost to me. Any advice on how to get the dealer to give me the best deal would be greatly appreciated.

A. Sorry to say, but unless you put a BUNCH of money down on your 05, you're most likely upside down in your current loan quite a bit. Meaning your truck is for example worth $20k (if you sold it) and you owe $25k. As for trade in, they'll offer you 25% less than what you could sell it for and tack on the outstanding debt to your new loan. I strongly urge you to sell the Dodge yourself and buy a Toyota if you're still wanting a truck, as they hold their value much better. As for accessories, you're not going to get any. If you want a good deal, do this: 1. Never trade your current vehicle in, sell it yourself, even if you just break even on your current loan. 2. Always try to pay as close as possible to "invoice price" (what the dealer… [cont.]

A. When you buy the car you are required to sign a form that states you are paying an extra $250 so you can have the option of returning the car w/in 3 days. If you do not choose that option, you cannot simply return the car. I got screwed a month ago - now I'm stuck w/ a car I really didn't want in the first place ... effing car salesmen - pushy bastards. Edit - to the know-it-all : how about answer the question and not make rude comments about other people's answers.

A. For a vehicle handbook please use our website... For customer service, please go to your local Department of Motor Vehicles. For Service, please contact the IRS and press number 57. Should your car not pass emissions, plan to arrive at the EPA and stand in line to acquire the necessary forms to fill out and submit to the car dealer for not adhering to federal law. The "Lemon Law" is next on the table in Congress.
