Trying to sell my car in Illinois but my car is registered in New York?
Q. I just moved from New York state to Illinois two months ago. However, my company plans me to move me to the office in California. I'm trying to sell my car in Illinois before I move to California and planning to buy a new or used car over there. I don't plan on changing my title, insurance, registration from NY to Illinois since I'm changing my car and live in California. How can I sell an out-of-state registered car?
Asked by apknuke - Thu Oct 26 03:30:28 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You shouldn't have any problem selling it with a NY title. The person who is buying your car should just be able to take the NY title to the DMV to transfer ownership. It might just take a little longer for the paperwork to be done. You may want to check with the DMV in Illinois just to be sure, as motor vehicle laws do vary from state to state.

Can I deduct a new car purchase for my business?
Q. My wife and I purchased a new car in 2006. The car is used for both personal use, and for use in my business. Can I deduct anything on my taxes in regards to the purchase of this car? Would I be listing the car as a business asset?
Asked by Kevin - Fri Feb 16 11:46:46 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes, you can. However, the IRS only allows you to take pieces over time. You'll need to look into the instructions for depreciation or form 4562. Most cars are subject to the luxury auto limits meaning there is a cap as to how much you can deduct as depreciation expense each year. For someone that has never dealt with this before, it can seem very complicated. Now might be a good time to hire a CPA to handle your return. Part of the cost (for the CPA) is also deductible as a business expense!

How do I make my car smell like brand new when it was first bought?
Q. Notice that new smell of a brand new car? Nothing feels as great as having your car smell like brand new. It just gives a great feeling. Unfortunately, the smell is temporary and you might be interested in purchasing another new car in the future just for that smell. But isn't there something I could buy for the car so it smell like brand new again?
Asked by Dad - Fri May 16 23:17:28 2008 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments
A. nope, that smell came from the materials used, the seat padding, the seat material the headliner, the carpet underlayment, the carpetting add the clean no dust condition inside the dash board and never opperated components. thats the smell and even a fresh custom bumper to bumper build doesnt replicate that totally

What are some car dealerships in Connecticut that are offering good deals on new cars?
Q. My family is looking to buy a new car, preferably an SUV. There are two kids in the family and two parents. Which cars do you think would be the best for safety, ROOM, and mpg.

A. - here's a good website to look for real good, affordable and quality vehicles from official government auctions! I bought my Honda Accord for just $2250 with a milage of 5,270! And it's been already a year I'm riding my car and it's still doing well! I've recommended it to my friends and all of them are enjoying their used cars and have no problem with it! P.S: Please use Firefox as I just found out the website is only optimized for Firefox browsers and NOT Microsoft Internet Explorers.

How many gallons of water does car manufacturers use to pre-wash new cars before putting on primer?
Q. For each new car. Of course, I think they need to wash the car after painting it also, don't they? Also how many new cars are manufactured each day, around the world? Does anyone know? I did not know that. But I do dare assume they use huge amounts of water to wash off the chemicals before putting on the paint? Please, educate me on this issue. I have heard many different stories.

When buying a new car, is it good to have the car sprayed with rust proof?
Q. Okays, I am going to buy a new car, and I was just wondering if it was good to purchase the rust proof spray package. This package is where they spray the outside and bottom of your car to protect it from rusting. I live in Minnesota, so is this really worth purchasing for 700 dollars? I guess my real question is, does it really work?

Is it okay to jump start a car with another car which has a new battery?
Q. I need to jump start my car, but my friend won't let me use his car's battery, claiming that: He recently replaced his car battery with a new one. He's been told that a new battery should not be used to jump start another battery for the first year of the new battery's use (I hope that made sense). So, is my friend making up facts or is this true?

How green is scrapping an old car and buying a new one?
Q. People who own cars that have high c02 emissions are going to be taxed more under the guise of a 'green tax to encourage green behaviour'. The only logic here is that the government want people to scrap their old cars and buy new lower emission ones. How green is it to scrap a perfectly good car and replace it with a new one? Where would there be figures/data for this?
Asked by P P - Tue May 27 07:25:27 2008 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments
A. No idea if there are any figures for this, but recycling of cars is down to a pretty good fine art these days, with something like 80-95% of material reclaimed. Of course, reclaiming the materials and building the new car also takes masses of energy, so it all depends on how much you use the car and how close you were to the tax brackets. In the short term this effect of people scrapping 'good' cars for new cars is obviously harmful, but 10 years down the line it will have almost certainly been a net saving measure.

It is a little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great. The carbon literally absorbs and eliminates the odors and works for a long time. It works so much better than all those sprays and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. Also, alot of sprays have warning statements about being eye irritant. and gels that say keep away from fabric, etc. and just don't eliminate odors. Just put a couple of these in your car and trunk. Is it legal to raffle a car in the state of New Jersey?
Q. I am trying to recoup costs of a car which I purchased last year. Basically it costs a decent amount of money (30,000) and I wish to attempt to sell tickets for a raffle which would allow the winner to then own the car and I would keep the raffle money. Im not sure if that is legal in the state of New Jersey, so I wanted to see if anyone knew if this was possible. Thanks for your help.

A. My suggestion is to get something that has good safety ratings, and is cheaper to insure. You may want to contact an insurance company to see what sorts of cars are cheaper to insure. A lot of young drivers crash Civics, so the insurance is higher. If you are looking for an inexpensive new car, the Chevy Aveos are very nice. They are surprisingly fun to drive. Or a Chevy Cobalt. You may also consider looking at used cars, but be careful. You may want to have a male friend who is good with cars to go with you so he can inspect it and if you test drive, he can listen for any possible problems with it. Plus, there are a lot of salespeople who don't respect women. My first car was a Volkswagen Bug. It was great. They are safe. and you can… [cont.]

How do I sell my old car when I am using my license plates on my new car.?
Q. I live in Toronto, Ontario. I am planning on buying a used car through private sale. When I buy the car, I will be transferring my license plates from my old 1996 Ford Escort to my new car. I will then need to sell my old car. What do I use for license plates for the old car when prospective car buyers want to take it for a test drive. Do I need to keep the license plates on my old car, and buy new license plates for the new car, and then return the old license plates when I sell my old car - or am I stuck with two license plates. Do I need to keep insurance on the old car while I am selling it?

A. You can't transfer plates until your old car is sold , you will have to buy new plates for the car you are buying and when you sell the car you just have to destroy the plates from your old car, you should keep liability on your old car until it's sold as people will want to drive it.

What is the best way to keep a new black car's paint in "showroom" condition?
Q. I have a brand new black car and I want to keep the exterior looking like it rolled off the showroom floor for as long as possible. I have had the car three weeks and I've been through a local "touchless" car wash about 6 times. I've just noticed the paint is already starting to show those tiny swirl marks when viewed up close. Do I need to resort to hand washing with special cloths to avoid damaging the super-glossy finish any more than I already have? Any recommendations on the best products (wash mitts, liquid soap, wax, etc) to use?

A. there is nothing you can do about the swirl marks that I know of. I have a Black bike and to keep it in top shape I only hand wash and turtle wax it, when sitting for longer than 8 hours it is covered. And I periodicaly wipe it down with a soft cloth so the dirt does not build up and scratch the paint.

How insurance coverage work for new a car ?
Q. Hi, I intend to buy a car by the end of this month on the weekend (I work from Monday to Friday and do not want to skip working). I will use my old car for trade-in. And I will switch my current insurance on to the new car. Since it all will be happening on the weekend (my insurance office closed), I will have to switch the insurance on Monday. If something happen to the new car before the insurance switched (sometime before Monday), who will cover the car ? Any advice ? Thank you...

A. If you drive the car without insurance, and something happens, it's not covered. Call your agent and tell him you are buying a new car. If you can get the VIN in advance of the sale, it would be helpful. Ask him to get you covered before you drive it. He should be able to help.

Q. Hi, I intend to buy a car by the end of this month on the weekend (I work from Monday to Friday and do not want to skip working). I will use my old car for trade-in. A. It is most likely a bad connection causing a voltage drop in the starter circuit. Most likely causes are where the cables connect to the battery and/ or the starter. You can use a voltmeter to perform a voltage drop test at each connection. Place the test leads across each connection while someone "cranks" the starter. If the the Volt meter shows any significant voltage, you have found your bad connection.

Should I get a new car or a used one? What car would you suggest?
Q. I'm a 25 yr old graduate student in need of a reliable car. I want to have good gas milage (at least upper 20s) and lots of room. Of the new cars I like the functionality and reliability of the Honda Element, but think it sucks too much gas. I am thinking more along the lines of the Toyota Prius or Matrix. Maybe a Honda Civic hybrid. As you can tell, if I got a used car it would probably be either a Honda or Toyota. However, I will listen to ANY suggestions! I have around $23K to spend.

A. It depends on what you are looking for. $23,000 buys a pretty decent new car. You can get a Hyundai Sonata LX, a Honda Accord EX (if you bargain hard), or the last of the 2006 Camrys. I would also look into a Prius, but those are typically going at sticker right now and it will be hard to find deals. If you are willing to buy used, I am going to suggest getting a Certified Pre Owned Infiniti I35- it is a roomy, comfortable car, gets decent mileage for its size and engine (255 horsepower with 25ish MPG) and you get the nice dealer service that goes with owning an Infiniti. For $23,000, if you want and/or need a small SUV, a Toyota RAV4 would be an excellent choice for your money.
