Q. I have a background in banking & international management, and am interviewing for a position with a well-known consulting firm in a few days. Companies hire 'consultants' for a range of services- usually to get expertise or guidance when they don't have the capabilities in-house. Sounds like you are headed to management consulting, and as the name implies, companies would hire you to help direct their company through either improving their operations, or navigating complex business deals. Generally, management consulting firms conslidate talent from industry and leading business schools, and offer that expertise back to firms to help them improve their bottom line. Example: the firm where I worked, would go to a Fortune 100 firm say "we can help you improve your business processes saving you x number of dollars, and our fee would come out of those savings". That company… [cont.] Answered by justr - Sat Nov 25 22:50:30 2006 How beneficial is a psychology degree for a career in business consulting? Q. I am currently in my first year of university doing a business and arts conjoint degree. For my business degree, I am double majoring in management and economics. For my arts I am majoring in classical studies. I intend to work as a business consultant/analyst, particularly in the strategy and human capital department. I know classical studies doesn't relate to my career path, and I'm doing it purely out of interest. I was wondering how beneficial switching to a psychology degree for my arts would be (I am also interested in it). Is this a major sought after by business consulting firms? Asked by Andrew - Tue Sep 23 17:21:06 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Psychology would be a great addition to your studies for this. Remember that Psychology focuses on understanding human behavior, and there's a whole section of Psychology that focuses on businesses (Organizational and Industrial Psychology) in which people study what makes businesses work well, how to motivate people and engage them in companies and organizations, and how to manage change. Given what you've said, this would be a great addition for you. I'm a Psychology Professor and an Executive Coach, so I understand the the role Psychology plays in business development, change, and management very well. You'd be well served by this switch. Q. I'm getting ready to enter a top grad school to work on my MBA and have had mixed thoughts on the consulting field. Just curious if anyone can add shed some light on the pro's and con's of working for a consulting company. Asked by Gumbi - Mon Nov 12 00:32:31 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I worked for Deloitte for 4 years. pros: Excellent training, well respected firm should you move on (good resume material), get to travel, work with very bright people, learn professionalism and sales techniques, work for a variety of firms, industries and situations Cons: They really work you - very long hours, high expectations for billable time, always travelling, never get to see the end of something (work on one part of a firm and move on), you can be someting of a commodity to them (management), they hire a lot, have high attrition and work you through a system which is great if you fit but tends to turn you into a cookie cut from a mold.
