A business (also known as a company, enterprise, and firm) is a legally recognized organization designed to provide goods or services, or both, to consumers, businesses and governmental entities. Businesses are predominant in capitalist economies. Most businesses are privately owned. A business is typically formed to earn profit that will increase the wealth of its owners and grow the business itself. The owners and operators of a business have as one of their main objectives the receipt or generation of a financial return in exchange for work and acceptance of risk. Notable exceptions include cooperative enterprises and state-owned enterprises. Businesses can also be formed not-for-profit or be state-owned.

The etymology of "business" relates to the state of being busy either as an individual or society as a whole, doing commercially viable and profitable work. The term "business" has at least three usages, depending on the scope — the singular usage (above) to mean a particular company or corporation, the generalized usage to refer to a particular market sector, such as "the music business" and compound forms such as agribusiness, or the broadest meaning to include all activity by the community of suppliers of goods and services. However, the exact definition of business, like much else in the philosophy of business, is a matter of debate and complexity of meanings.

What if businesses paid huge fines and lost their license for hiring illegal immigrants?
Q. Would that not solve the problem? Punish the businesses that hire them. If we need them, then let them come, if we don't, punish the businesses and organizations that help them. There is a whole industry set up in chuting people into the US from Mexico and its on both sides of the border. I went into a public notary office in a predominatly Hispanic neighborhood and there were advertisements for getting a second form of ID in Spanish there.

A. It would sure help with the problem. Denying illegals housing and medical care would also help. Of course, its all going to become moot when Obama gives them all amnesty in exchange for their votes.

How to search for businesses of certain types within a radius of a specific city?
Q. Does anyone know of a web site, or some clever way to find certain types of businesses in a specific area (preferably without having to perform a separate search for each business type). For example. Let's say I want to find all of the businesses of the following types, within 100 miles of Omaha, NE: aluminum castings, steel castings, water jet cutting, welding How could I do that?

How are big businesses affecting this current US recession?
Q. Throughout modern history, depressions and recessions have always made someone fight for the idea of "growing big business = growing economy." Is this happening today, in the reverse? Are big businesses growing or shrinking while our economy is slowing?

A. Big business hurt also. Look at how many big banks collapsed: wasn't it CIT last week? Depending on who you believe, this recession is not caused by businesses, but rather the Federal Reserve. In one view by John B Taylor, he said the Fed lowered interest rates too low and made the housing bubble pop with extreme pain. Another view is the ways people invest with little risks involved. Took a gamble that didn't have much risk to themselves. Basically a problem with capitalist bastards and laissez-faire government policies.
