Australia (pronounced /əˈstreɪljə/ ə-STRAYL-yə or /ɒˈstreɪljə/ o-STRAYL-yə, or more formally as /ɔːˈstreɪliə/ aw-STRAY-lee-ə), officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the continental mainland (the world's smallest), the island of Tasmania, and numerous smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Neighbouring countries include Indonesia, East Timor, and Papua New Guinea to the north, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia to the north-east, and New Zealand to the southeast. For some 40,000 years before European settlement commenced in the late 18th century, the Australian mainland and Tasmania were inhabited by around 250 individual nations of indigenous Australians. After sporadic visits by fishermen from the immediate north, and European discovery by Dutch explorers in 1606, the eastern half of Australia was claimed by the British in 1770 and initially settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales, founded on 26 January 1788. The population grew steadily in the following years; the continent was explored, and during the 19th century another five largely self-governing Crown Colonies were established. On 1 January 1901, the six colonies became a federation, and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. Since Federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system and remains a Commonwealth realm. The population is 22.0 million, with approximately 60% concentrated in and around the mainland state capitals of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide. The nation's capital city is Canberra, located in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Australia is a developed country, with a prosperous multicultural society and has excellent results in many international comparisons of national performance such as health care, life expectancy, quality of life, human development, public education, economic freedom, and the protection of civil liberties and political rights. Australian cities routinely rank among the world's highest in terms of cultural offerings and quality of life. It is a member of the United Nations, G-20 major economies, Commonwealth of Nations, ANZUS, OECD, and the WTO. From Wikipedia under the

Ansett Australia was an airline that collapsed in 2001. what factors lead to this. Asked by Sam F - Wed Feb 21 01:10:08 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Demise Air New Zealand, previously a 50% shareholder, acquired full ownership of Ansett in February 2000, buying out News Corporation. Competition from Qantas and a succession of start-up airlines, top-heavy and overpaid staff, an ageing fleet and grounding of the Boeing 767 fleet due to maintenance irregularities left Ansett seriously short of cash. Ansett became a drain on its parent and Air New Zealand itself was ultimately bailed out by the New Zealand Government (with the New Zealand Government giving Air New Zealand one billion dollars to stay afloat). Air New Zealand placed the Ansett group of companies into voluntary administration with PricewaterhouseCoopers on 13 September 2001. A day later, the administrator decided that Ansett… [cont.] Answered by UnitedLAX342 - Wed Feb 21 21:06:44 2007 Do you need to live in Australia once you are granted a temporary spouse visa?
Q. I am married to an Australian and we live in the UK. I am planning on applying for a temporary spouse visa, which then becomes a permanent visa after 2 years. What would happen if we didn't relocate to Australia having been granted the visa. Does this invalidate the visa and prevent a permanent one being issued in 2 years time. I am aware that you have to enter australia by the "specified initial entry date" on the visa, but less clear on whether you are then expected to remain there for the duration. Thanks for any advice. Asked by Andy - Thu Jul 9 14:38:12 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. No, you don't need to stay in Australia after you've validated your visa but it's important that you keep DIAC informed of your address. Spouses on temporary spouse visas are able to travel to and from Australia without restriction. It would probably be a good idea to be in Australia when your visa is due to become permanent because there will be an interview to prove that the relationship is still intact at that time and the process will be simpler if you're here, but if (and only if) you apply for your original visa offshore, your permanent visa can be granted either onshore or offshore provided DIAC know exactly where you are at that time. Note that when you have your permanent visa, it is valid for only 5 years if you are outside… [cont.] Answered by Ozmaniac - Fri Jul 10 10:22:02 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "australia" The Commonwealth of Australia is a country in the southern hemisphere comprising the mainland of the world's smallest continent, the major island of Tasmania and a number of other islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
